Can air conditioning be ultra-efficient, flexible and sustainable?

With Blue Frontier's technology, the answer is YES to all.

Blue Frontier develops next-generation air conditioning systems that replace conventional vapor-compression dependence with high-efficiency, heat-driven cooling, built-in thermal energy storage, and independent control of temperature and humidity. Blue Frontier was named 2026 AHR Expo Product of the Year, the HVAC industry’s highest honor, recognizing breakthrough performance, efficiency, and grid flexibility.

Originally developed in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Blue Frontier systems are now deployed in commercial facilities, including universities, schools, movie theaters, restaurants, supermarkets and more.

Why Blue Frontier Won Product of the Year

Blue Frontier’s technology fundamentally changes how cooling and dehumidification are generated. Unlike conventional systems that tie cooling capacity directly to real-time electricity consumption, Blue Frontier decouples comfort from energy use. This allows buildings to maintain precise indoor conditions while dramatically reducing energy demand during the most expensive and carbon-intensive hours of the day.

Key differentiators include:

45–90% reduction in energy consumption vs. conventional HVAC
Up to 3× higher efficiency than traditional DOAS systems
Independent control of temperature and dewpoint, eliminating overcooling and reheat
Built-in 4–6 hour thermal energy storage for true load shifting
Heat-driven performance, with rising efficiency at higher outdoor temperatures

This combination of performance, economics, comfort, and grid flexibility is what distinguished Blue Frontier from conventional air conditioning systems.

How the Technology Works

Blue Frontier uses TE-Sal™, a non-corrosive, eco-friendly liquid desiccant, to independently control dewpoint and temperature while delivering 45–90% energy savings and built-in thermal energy storage.

TE-Sal™ dehumidifies outdoor air to a targeted dewpoint, while an indirect evaporative cooling process independently controls dry-bulb temperature. By decoupling latent and sensible loads, the system delivers exactly the conditions required for occupant comfort—no more and no less.

Each system incorporates a dispatchable thermal battery that enables operators to:

• Rapid-charge using renewable or low-cost electricity
• Shift energy consumption away from peak utility hours
• Deliver 4–6 hours of full cooling capacity under 1,800 watts

Because the vapor-compression cycle is fully isolated from occupied space, Blue Frontier systems enable future use of ultra-low or zero-GWP refrigerants, including propane—creating a clear path to fully decarbonized air conditioning.

First Commercial Product: Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS)

Blue Frontier’s first commercial offering is a 15- and 20-ton packaged Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) designed to address ventilation and humidity control in commercial buildings.

With ISMREs up to 45 and EERs up to 120, the system can be roof-, ground-, or indoor-mounted and integrates seamlessly with building automation systems, utility demand-response programs, and on-site renewable generation.

Customer benefit from:

• Lower operating costs and rapid ROI
• Unmatched occupant comfort and indoor air quality
• Reduced peak demand and grid strain
• Increased resilience to extreme heat events
• Long-term asset value protection
