Can air conditioning be sustainable?

Unless its electricity consumption is pegged to renewable energy generation, it uses refrigerants with zero global warming potential, and it operates at much higher efficiencies than conventional systems, the answer is NO.

Blue Frontier exists to make air conditioning sustainable. The company is commercializing game-changing and award-winning technology originally developed in collaboration with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

Blue Frontier’s products use liquid desiccants (proprietary salt-solutions) to fundamentally change how air conditioning is created. These products operate at much higher efficiencies than conventional systems, generating energy savings from 50% to more than 90%. These units also use liquid desiccants for energy storage, creating flexible use of electricity without affecting people’s comfort. This allows our customers to tie electricity consumption to renewable energy generation and to lowest cost electricity, decarbonizing their operations.

Blue Frontier is also working to eliminate the use of high GWP refrigerants. Since in Blue Frontier systems air conditioning is generated using a liquid desiccant, refrigerant processes never come in contact with the building interior or with air that would enter the building or living spaces. This alleviates safety considerations that limit the use of low GWP refrigerants in conventional systems.

We are excited to introduce our first product, a Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) capable of providing substantial reductions in the energy consumption associated with outdoor air ventilation and humidity control in commercial buildings.
